Winchester's recycling centre in Garnier Road will stay open for a further three years, Hampshire County Council agreed this week.
The household waste recycling centre, opened in 1974, was due to move to Bar End, Winchester, but permission has not even been granted for the new site and building work has yet to begin.
Despite strong objections from Winchester City Council, which believes cars turning into the site are a hazard, the centre will now remain open for three more years.
The HWRC, currently only accessible from the St Cross end of Garnier Road because of the road closure, is one of the most successful in the country, according to the county council.
Between 2001 and 2002 it handled nearly 5,500 tonnes of waste, of which 65% was recycled.
