Winchester City Council chief executive, David Cowan, will retire from local government next year.
After more than 22 years in the post he is the longest-serving local authority chief executive in the UK
He he plans to retire at his 60th birthday in May 2003.
David (pictured right), with his wife Margaret, plans to spend the initial part of his retirement between Hampshire and South West France, while continuing with a number of national public sector interests on a part-time basis.
Leader of the Council, Sheila Campbell, said she had a very high regard for Mr Cowan: "He has served the city council for many years with great loyalty, always looking after the rights of the district and its residents."
