PAUL Rattue was the table tennis star of the week, putting in a dazzling display to frustrate St Peter's Basingstoke and District League title hopes.
Rattue was unbeaten for Cannons and his treble, which included the scalps of Sean Pickin and Pete Matthews, saw his side pick up five valuable points to take them into fifth place.
The 5-5 draw meant that Centerprise International took over top spot, two points clear of St Peter's after an 8-2 win over Hannington A.
Centerprise's John Goodyer and Dave Salisbury took the scalp of John Cosgrove but both found John Ahlan too strong.
The two bottom sides that were the sides promoted from division two had a hard-fought match that ended in a 5-5 draw.
The hero of the encounter was the RAF's John Edbrooke, who hit a great treble. Edbrooke started the match with a 14-16, 11-9, 4-11, 11-6, 12-10 win over Dave Kimberley before sealing his maximum and a draw with a five-set win over KG A's Pete Millie in the last match of the evening.
Steve Grover hit his first win of the season with a four-set victory over Roger Barnacle, who in turn battled to a five-set win over Millie. Millie's only singles success came with a win over Alan Opie, who also saw success by defeating Steve Grover.
In division two, St Peter's B moved a massive 14 points clear after hitting nine past Hannington B.
Brian Wilde maintained his 100 per cent record but was shaken in the first match of the evening. Wilde went two sets down to George Freeman but then was relieved to take the next three. Steve Armstrong also hit three and Alan Lipscombe picked up two wins, including a great five-set verdict over George Freeman.
Steve Redstall picked up the consolation point with a three-set victory over Lipscombe.
In division three, Queen's C had their first loss of the season but it was to title favourites Oakley A. Oakley's Chaz Smith was untroubled and Chris Smith picked up a noteable point, beating Roy Pike in the first game of the night to set the team on their way.
Mike Chambers achieved the best results for Queen's with two wins that included an 11-9 win in the fifth set over Charles Smith. In their next match, Queen's came up against an on-fire John McLarty that resulted in another 6-4 loss.
McLarty won all his three games in three straight sets and team-mate Paul Rampton hit two, losing out 14-12 in the fifth set to Roy Pike.
Oakley B are looking good after a 7-3 win over KG E, with Ron Cleave and Brian Gridley hitting their first trebles of the campaign. Young Alex Piper teamed up with Gridley to take the doubles.
Labour B fielded only two players for the second week running, resulting in a 6-4 defeat by Queen's D.
The noteable victories were Lorraine Watkins' three-sets win over John Davey, all in game seven, and Brian Barnes' four-set win over Watkins.
