BASINGSTOKE council is to award more than £750,000 to two housing projects in the borough.
A grant of £99,600 has been awarded to Kingfisher Housing Association to provide affordable housing for up to 16 people on a development in Winchester Road, Basingstoke.
The grant is for the building of three two-bedroomed houses and one two-bedroomed bungalow at Down Grange Cottages - part of an estate of nine properties which have already been given planning permission on a site owned by the association.
Kingfisher has also been awarded a grant of £678,000 for Oakley Lodge, in Burgess Road, Basingstoke, to be refurbished and turned into 15 units to accommodate vulnerable or homeless people and families.
The council says this will avoid the need to place homeless families in bed and breakfast accommodation, which is often outside the area.
Cabinet member for communities and regeneration Councillor Tony Jones said: "Both the affordable housing homes and the temporary accommodation facilities will provide valuable resources to meet a critical housing shortfall in the borough."
