THE CHAIRMAN of the Isle of Wight Council, Councillor Heather Humby, has sent a message of congratulation to Cowes-based yachtswoman, Ellen MacArthur, for her single-handed victory in the gruelling Route du Rhum race.
Despite equipment failure and growing fatigue, Ellen completed the 3,540 mile course two days faster than the record. Race committee president, Sylvie Viant, is reported to have described her as "the greatest female solo sailor of all time".
Councillor Humby's letter, which was sent by e-mail to the Caribbean island of Guadeloupe, reads: "On behalf of the people of the Isle of Wight, I would like to congratulate you on your magnificant monohull victory in the Route du Rhum race.
"When in 2001 you attended a Cowes reception put on by this council to mark your great success in the Vendee Globe, few attending doubted there would be more record-breaking feats in your ocean racing career.
"All the plaudits you received since crossing the finishing line off Guadeloupe are, I am sure, very well deserved. It is also pleasing that you have, in your moment of triumph, been keen to pay tribute to your supply team back in Cowes.
"We look forward to seeing you on the Island in the near future, and wish you the best of fortune in your attempt, early next year, with the Kingfisher 2 multi-hull to break the non-stop around-the-world record."
