NO ONE would have believed, back in 1974 when Abba first came to public attention after winning the Eurovision Song Contest with Waterloo, that the Swedish quartet would still be celebrated more than a quarter of a century later.
But in the wonderful world of Abba, the ridiculous and the sublime always went hand-in-hand. Masters of the pop scene for a good ten years, they produced songs that appealed to the dancefloor diva in everyone but contained an emotional and musical complexity that found fans outside the disco scene. So the group who produced one of the most infectiously upbeat songs of all time, Dancing Queen, could floor you just as easily with a heart-rending drama like The Winner Takes It All.
Helping to keep the songs - and the outrageous costumes - alive are Voulez Vous, with two hours of Fernando, SOS and Super Trouper.
December 1, The Mayflower, Southampton. Performance: 7.30pm. Tickets: £17.50. Box office: 023 8071 1811.
