YOUNGSTERS in Southampton have been scrumming down as part of a new community rugby programme.
Pupils at Millbrook Community School muddied themselves yesterday under the guidance of Rob Memory, their new community rugby development officer.
The 20 Year 7 pupils took part in an hour-long coaching session under Rob's guidance as they got to grips with the basics of rugby.
Rob, 36, a Winchester Rugby Club prop forward, said: "There is no real rugby focus in the city unlike the rest of the county but the response so far has been excellent."
Southampton Rugby Club recently recruited Rob to roll out the community rugby programme, funded by the Outer Shirley Regeneration Board with a grant of £38,400.
The scheme, running at Millbrook, Bellemoor, Cantell and Redbridge secondary schools, aims to encourage children to get fit and enjoy rugby.
Millbrook school pupil Romin Williams, 12, said: "It's good fun. It's the only time I get to play rugby."
PE teacher John Parker said: "Rob is great with the kids - they all seem to really enjoy the coaching sessions.
"Rugby is an option here up until Christmas for Years 7 to 10 and we are looking to start up a Year 9 school rugby team. We run after-school training as well."
To launch the regeneration-funded rugby programme, Southampton Ruby Club is holding an open day on Sunday, December 8, at their pitches in Brownhill Way, Redbridge.
Future sponsors and volunteers are needed. For more information or to volunteer contact Rob on 07855 334043.
