RAIN-soaked Eastleigh gave way to sunshine smiles provided by one of the most famous carnival cavalcades in the world.

Santa's grand arrival to officially launch the town's Christmas celebrations was given that unique Notting Hill Carnival flavour.

Forty members of the Flamboyan Community Association, who regularly star in the capital's famous street carnival, took part in Eastleigh's grand Yuletide parade.

The cool taste of the Caribbean accompanied Father Christmas as he made his way through the town's streets. His sleigh was pulled by huskies Bubble and Squeak.

In their brightly-coloured Caribbean costumes the Notting Hill carnival revellers attracted a bumper crowd of spectators who gave them a rousing welcome.

Santa was also escorted by a squad of motorcyclists on their gleaming Harley Davidsons.

Among those in the spectacular parade were Eastleigh's carnival court, mayor Councillor Gillian Connell, the Eastleigh and Totton Girls' and Boys' Brigade bands, the 14th Eastleigh Scout and Guide Band The Spitfires and a float from the Fleming Park Leisure Centre.

Staff from the Swan Centre, which masterminded the Santa parade, got into the party mood by dressing in the Flamboyan style. Members of the Swan Centre netball team also stepped out into the parade.

Young musicians from local secondary schools Toynbee and Thornden entertained before the mayor switched on the Christmas lights. It might not be the Caribbean but there was a warm glow about Eastleigh as the town's Christmas officially started.
