People from across the Winchester district played their part in raising cash for Children in Need last week with a variety of events.

Four pupils from St Faith's school in Winchester decided to hold a variety show to raise cash.

Francesca Cronin, Hattie Girling, Helen Slater and Lulu Galvin, pictured above, hosted the show at St Paul's Church Hall on Saturday.

The show, which had an American theme, opened with a short sketch on friendship.

The finale was a rendition of An Eternal Flame, which they adapted to reflect the Children in Need theme. It is hoped the event raised £500 for the TV charity appeal.

Meanwhile staff of the Brendon Nursing Trust home in Park Road, Winchester took part in a fancy dress football match at North Walls recreation ground.

The fancy dress theme continued when staff also decided to go to work in costume.

The two events raised £543 for the BBC TV charity appeal.

Countryside supporters also joined in the appeal. Four Hampshire hunts have pledged half of Saturday's takings to Children in Need and run collections at meets across the county.

The Hampshire, Hursley Hambledon, New Forest and Vine and Craven Foxhounds, along with the Meon Valley and New Forest Beagles, were doing their bit for the national fund-raising day.

Hampshire Countryside Alliance chairman, Bill Tyrwhitt-Drake, said: "Saturday's meets, when people from all over Hampshire gathered, were an ideal opportunity to get them to put their hands in their pockets and raise money for Children in Need.

"With the addition of contributions from the hunts we have raised well over £1,500 and we now hope to make this an annual event."

And this afternoon there will be a jailbreak at the law courts in Winchester but the public needn't worry.

Two volunteers disguised as convicts will be pursued through the city's streets cy court staff who will be collecting for Children in Need.
