THE Middle Wallop Army Air Corp and Andover Leisure Centre clocked up more than 600 miles in a 12-hour rowing race to raise £3,200 for Children in Need last week. The most outstanding performance came from the leisure centre's oldest member - 80-year-old Brian Payne. He rowed for half an hour non-stop and even out-rowed some of the Army team and ALC fitness instructors. But despite his best efforts the leisure centre were pipped at the post by the Army team. The event was among many events in the town all aimed at raising much-needed funds for children's charities. Childcare students from Cricklade College donned fancy dress and paraded around the town centre raising £923 for the charity. They also handed out Pudsey puppets, badges and balloons to passers-by. Andover Childminders Association raised £52.60 by holding a teddy bear's picnic, bandaging the children's teddies and eating teddy biscuits and crisps. Barbara Leach, vice-chairman, made more than £200 by standing in red and yellow jelly for two hours. Norman Court Prep School was full of pop stars, sports stars and stars of stage and screen as staff and children dressed up as their favourite personality. Elvis Presley, James Bond, Britney Spears, Madonna, Crocodile Dundee and Cruella De Vil were some of the stars on show as the school raised £280. Whitchurch Sports and Social Club raised £218 with an 18-team quiz and raffle. The Newbury Building Society in Whitchurch raised £71.51 by holding a raffle with a main prize of a limited edition Pudsey Bear. A ten-hour pedal on exercise bikes in the offices of ABRO Personnel at DLO Andover raised £440 - with more funds being collected each day. Children at Andover C of E School sported crazy hair and wacky hats during their bad hair, good hat day. Donations to the value of £176 were collected on a Pudsey outline on the hall floor. Anton Junior School pupils enjoyed Pudsey biscuits baked by the school cook which earned the charity £69. Donations are still flooding in for Nicholas Kirby who had so far collected nearly £300 after having his shoulder-length hair cut very short at Supercuts in the Chantry Centre. Bus driver Martin Emberton spent three days on the buses around Andover dressed as Pudsey Bear and raised £226 from passengers. Activities, including a PlayStation challenge, quiz, rowing and meeting Pudsey, raised £872.10 at HSBC in the High Street, Andover. Albright Engineering staff in Whitchurch paid to throw sponges and cold water at company bosses and fellow employees. Magician Michael King put on a special show for children visiting the Chantry Centre. Youngsters attending the Rookery at Rookwood School dressed up and baked cakes. The nationwide appeal raised more than £13,500,000 on Children in Need night - £600,000 more than last year. In the Southampton BBC region £711,371 was the total on the night.
