HRH The Duke of York has agreed to become Patron of the Royal Winchester Club.
He succeeds the Earl of Caernavon who stepped down last year.
Royal Winchester, established in 1888, is one of the longest established Royal clubs, gaining its Royal Patronage in 1893 from the Duke of Connought, young brother of the Prince of Wales.
Today Royal Winchester has a full complement of 750 members and the club two years ago located to its new clubhouse following a fire which totally destroyed the old headquarters.
The Duke of York is a keen golfer who is a regular visitor to the Open Championships. Royal Winchester Club captain Tony Taylor said: "We are immensely proud that he has agreed to become our Patron.
"The Duke of York is a fine golfer who has a declared interest in the wonderful game.
"His appointment forges the strong royal link of which we are very proud here. It goes without saying that his Royal Highness is welcome to play the course whenever he wishes. I'm sure he would enjoy it."
