James Beattie gave Saints the dream start at Newcastle today but they came away with nothing as the Geordies hit back either side of half time to win 2-1.
Beattie's sixth goal in six games was an absolute belter and came after just 60 seconds.
Brett Ormerod was tackled on the edge of the area by Andy O'Brien and the ball fell to Beattie, who smashed home a volley from 20 yards out.
Saints continued to press for a second and created several opportunities in the first half hour but then Newcastle took over, levelling five minutes before half time through Shola Ameobi.
Kieron Dyer span past Wayne Bridge to get to the by-line and cross for the Magpies man to slide home from close range.
On 54 minutes, Hugo Viana found Aaron Hughes unmarked in the area and he scored the winner.
