A variety of new rules were put to a well-attended Cross Solent League ninth annual meeting at BAT Sports Club.
The management proposed them in relation to administration and playing regulations, one being to increase the maximum number of overs a bowler could bowl from eight to ten. It was rejected by the majority after a great deal of discussion.
Bowlers limitations were first introduced in Saturday league cricket and the Sunday league followed. Many enthusiasts, though, feel it gives an advantage to the batsmen, not having to face a consistent quality of bowling.
Entry for new clubs is now strictly controlled and only Portsmouth CC was accepted as a new entrant for next season, having met the requirements of the league.
The issue of coloured clothing being acceptable for players while still using the traditionally red cricket ball was raised. Bearing in mind the Health and Safety aspect, the league management will refer it to the Hampshire Cricket Board.
