Justin Rose was tied eighth - five shots off the lead - after the first round of the Mitsui Sumitumo Visa Taiheiyo Masters in Japan yesterday.
The Hampshire star was invited back to the land of the rising sun, after his superb victory there in the Chunichi Crowns last May.
Four birdies, one the result of a huge putt at the 12th, carried Rose to a two-under-par total of 70. Among those sharing eighth spot with him were recent USA Tour winner Charles Howell.
