WHITCHURCH Town Council has been looking at proposals to introduce waiting restrictions at the junction of Micheldever Road and Winchester Road.

Concerns had been raised by councillors about the obstruction caused in the immediate vicinity of the junction, particularly at the start and finish of the school day.

In response to this, Hamp-shire County Council has put forward proposals for a 'no waiting' restriction to prevent parking as part of an improvement programme for the town.

The plans include putting double and single yellow lines along parts of Michel-dever Road and Winchester Road, particularly near the shop entrance, and a waiting restriction in Winchester Road.

Cllr John Clark, chairman of the development committee, said: "It's the same problem we have got everywhere with the conflict between safety - when emergency vehicles cannot get through - and convenience for local residents who want to park their cars there.

"I recognise that whatever we do with these changes, we will inconvenience some people and convenience a lot more people because we have got double yellow lines in front of houses which have to be there because it's close to the junction."

Councillors supported moves to introduce double yellow lines around the corner in Winchester Road and hoped the waiting restrictions, which would be imposed between 8am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, would allow residents to park outside their homes overnight.

Chairman and town mayor Cllr Barry Jackman said: "I realise this has got to be looked at very carefully."

Councillors were looking at the proposals in more detail at their development committee this week.
