CORMORANTS Team Sillybaits' Graham Maton took the biggest match haul of his life when storming home in the latest round of the Cormorants Winter Series on Longbridge Lake with an incredible 103lb 15oz haul - more than double the weight of his nearest rival.
Amazingly, Maton's haul consisted of only a solitary 5lb carp with the rest of the haul made up of quality tench to 5lb plus skimmers to 2lb.
Drawn on peg 14 on the back bank, Maton caught from the start on waggler and trout pellet fished on the bottom and fed around four pints of pellets to keep the fish tightly shoaled for the duration of the match.
The haul is Matons first ever 100lb plus match weight and was a superb achievement for November.
Terry Sargent, who has had an excellent season, caught three bonus carp for just over 20lb on the feeder before switching to waggler and caster tactics to take a superb 30lb of quality silver fish to take 51lb 5oz to the scales.
Kaz Podsadowski finished third with 45lb 6oz of mainly carp taken on the waggler and paste from peg 29 with Cormorants Team Sillybaits Steve Rochester fourth with 42lb 5oz of carp on the waggler and paste. Others: M Hills (Cormorants) 37lb 14oz, D Hambidge (Dynamite Baits) 33lb 5oz.
The third round of the Witherington Farm teams of four saw Poingdestres stretch their lead with another excellent team performance with 38 points to win unchallenged from Beenys Boys on 33 points.
Cormorants were third on 30 and there was a three-way tie for fourth between Avon Angling, Eastleigh and Withies Select.
In the league at the halfway stage, last year's winners Carbotech trail league leaders Poing-destres by 115 points to 97 with Homestores and Withies Select joint third with 92 points.
Individually, Lee Goodfellow (Withy Wonder-ers) took 68lb 8oz of carp to 4lb from peg 11 on Cottage on a mixture of pole and waggler tactics for a comfortable success.
Phil Stride (Cormorants) took 58lb 5oz of carp to 6lb from peg 5 on Cottage on the method feeder and corn to finish second with Paul Barnard (Barneys Blacks) third with 58lb 4oz of small carp from the inner ring on Topmoor. Others: M Harvey (Avon Angling) 44lb 15oz, J Gray (Withies Select) 44lb 12oz, G Naylor (Poingdestres) 38lb 14oz.
The Salmon Leap AC held a club match on the outer ring of Topmoor at Witherington Farm with Simon Ball scoring an easy victory with 25lb 14oz of small carp to 2lb on the feeder and maggot.
Gary Wright finished second with 16lb 14oz of small carp on the pole and worm with Andy Dawkins third with 15lb 10oz of worm and caster caught carp with Steve Baker fourth with 11lb of small carp.
The second and final heat of The Beaumont Cup between Wareham, Christchurch, Wimborne and Ringwood saw the match switched from the Stour to Ringwood's wash pit at Northfield.
Wareham's Andrew Anton took a tench plus silver fish on the pole and caster for an impressive 24lb haul. Teammate Paul Edwards finished second with an 11lb carp plus bits for 15lb 6oz with Steve Nadin (Wareham) third with an 8lb carp and 5lb of bits for 13lb.
Wareham finished first on the day but it wasn't enough to win the cup, which went to Christchurch, who won the first round and finished second on the day.
Salisbury's club match on The Hampshire Avon at Salisbury saw the river coloured and rising with Ian Haydon needing just three chub and a few dace for 11lb 4oz on the stick float and maggot to win from Steve Brown with two chub and grayling for 7lb. Tom Baker took a mixed bag of 6lb 1oz, tying with Jim Smith for third with two chub.
The second Greenridge Farm Open on Jim Daltons Ampfield Fishery saw Alister Murchie, fishing pole and cat food, taking carp to 6lb from peg 6 on Canal One for a superb 48lb winning haul.
Pete Chen finished second with 45lb of carp from peg 16 on Canal Two with Mick Kenny (Eastleigh) third with 35lb. Others: D Parvin 32, D Self (Eastleigh) 27lb.
Sunday's third round of The Hants, Wilts and Dorset Winter League on Todber Manors Lakes near Gillingham could produce a landslide victory for home side Todber Manor, whose local knowledge of the five venues stands them in good stead.
League leaders Eastleigh will be hoping for damage limitation in the heat, which could prove a minefield for the league's leading sides.
