THE BUILD-UP to Christmas begins on Thursday with plenty of events aimed at getting shoppers in a festive mood.
Three major 'switching-on' events are happening in Southampton city centre. The city council's Christmas light display is due to be turned on by comedian Brian Conley at 7pm. Thousands of lights will sparkle along the high street.
They will be treated to live music performances along with fireworks and traditional roasted chestnuts. There will also be a carousel and children's funfair rides.
A spokesman said: "This festive season promises to offer an entertaining and lively run-up to Christmas.
"The city is in the top ten of shopping destinations and we are determined that this festive programme will keep us there."
The Marland's Shopping Centre has signed up two Saints. England international Wayne Bridge along with centre back Claus Lundekvam will be on hand to turn the lights on and open the centre's Santa's Grotto.
The Marland's show is due to start at 6.30pm and will be accompanied by the Southampton Youth Brass Band.
A cheque for the Wessex Cancer Trust is also due to be handed over by the two players.
WestQuay has the world-famous Butlin Redcoats helping Santa get settled into his new grotto.
A medley of former Christmas number one hits has been rehearsed to wow shoppers as the grotto is launched. That's on Thursday but slightly later at 7.30pm. Parking is as normal with people being advised to park only in designated car parks or areas.
