ONE of Hampshire's leading tennis clubs is digging up the clay courts where some of the country's top players have competed.
Over the years the six courts at Lee-on-the-Solent Tennis Club have seen the likes of Jo Durie, Tim Henman and James Delgado.
Now they are being replaced by six all weather courts. Two will have a porous acrylic surface while the remaining four will have a synthetic one.
The 1,600-member club has the financial backing of the Lawn Tennis Association but has refused to disclose the final cost of the project.
Club chairman Mike Tate said: "We want to refurbish and update our facilities and bring them up to the latest standards."
The club has appointed former British number one Chris Wilkinson as director of tennis.
The Hampshire-born player will also be the club's new coach.
