A VOLUNTEER squad to help residents in emergencies is being launched in the Meon Valley.
The group, Meon Valley First Responders, is part of a nationwide network of volunteers trained to act in emergencies in their areas.
There are also plans for a similar group in the Titchfield area.
The new group covers Droxford, Soberton, Newtown, Meonstoke, Corhampton, Exton and later Hambledon. The official launch is taking place at Droxford Village Hall next Friday.
The new group has received a grant from the Countryside Agency. The extra money will enable members to start with a full range of equipment, including defibrillators which are vital if a resident suffers a heart attack.
Volunteers are trained by Hampshire Ambulance paramedics and are seen as a vital back up to the ambulance service. Members are asked by the ambulance communications centre to attend emergencies in their area.
The new group already has 17 volunteers, including nurses and firefighters who are ready to respond in their spare time.
Co-ordinator Sue Frampton: "Time is vital if someone is having a heart attack. Because we are on the spot we can get to an emergency quickly. Another important factor is that we know are local areas so well."
Would-be volunteers should contact Sue on 01489 877314.
