Jewson Wessex League leaders Eastleigh bowed out 3-1 to Cornish outfit Porthleven, who lie only mid-table in the Carlsberg South Western League.
Having had David Laws' 35th-minute diving header cancelled shortly before half-time, Eastleigh's fortunes took a dramatic turn for the worse midway through the second half when defender Stuart Roberts pulled his man back at the expense of a penalty and was sent off into the bargain.
Once Porthleven had scored again, Eastleigh's ex-Saint David Hughes skimmed a shot off the angle of bar and upright and Laws saw one slither just wide, but Eastleigh general secretary Derik Brooks conceded: "Porthleven deserved to win.
"They went for us from the start and didn't let us settle.
"They're an experienced side who work very hard for each other and they've got a very good track record in the Vase.
"In my opinion they were the better all-round balanced side on the day."
