Apples are usually associated with Pork dishes but try out this recipe of Beef and Apple for a change.
Ingredients
500 grams beefsteak, cubed
100 grams butter
1 onion, diced
6-8 shallots
2 tablespoons plain flour
400 ml water
100 ml red wine
Four bayleaves
1 teaspoon of freshly ground pepper
250 grams chestnuts mushrooms, washed and cut in quarters
2 apples, peeled, cored and diced
Salt to taste
500 grams shortcrust pastry
500 grams puff pastry
Apple slices for garnish
Beaten egg
Method
1 Fry the beef in the butter for a few minutes to seal the meat, add the onions, shallots and fry for a further few minutes.
2 Add the flour and when it has soaked up all the butter add the water, wine, bayleaves and pepper and cook over a gently heat for about one hour.
3 Remove from heat, let it cool for a few minutes and add the mushrooms, apple and salt.
4 Line a greased pie dish with the shortcrust pastry.
5 Add the beef mixture and cover with the puff pastry.
6 Garnish with apple slices, brush with beaten egg and bake for about one hour.
Serve hot with sauted potatoes.
