SOLENT Stars have been warned against complacency after finally ending their run of defeats.
The note of caution has been sounded by their new American signing Dominique Jones in the wake of last week's 100-93 home success over Manchester Magic, which got Stars' National Conference League campaign off to a winning start.
The 6ft 5in, 25-year-old from Toledo, Ohio, contributed 15 points to a long overdue victory, which followed a dismal run of ten National Trophy defeats and a National Cup exit against the Brighton Bears.
It made welcome viewing for the Eastleigh faithful, but Jones warned afterwards: "We cannot get complacent. We have a lot of work to do yet, but this result shows we are improving."
Stars would do well to heed the American's words at Fleming Park tonight (8pm) when Oxford Devils are the visitors.
Although Oxford are new to the Conference, the two clubs have met regularly in friendly matches and Solent have often come out second best.
The most recent occasion was in September when the Devils scored a runaway 27-point pre-season victory at Fleming Park. The Oxford side are not unbeatable, however, and went down 94-75 to the all-conquering Teesside Mohawks in their Conference baptism last week.
Solent have no injury problems tonight, but their hopes of building on last weekend's success will rest with more big performances from key players like David Butterworth, who topped the 200-mark for the season in scoring 36 points. Mark Jackson weighed in with 30 of his own and Jon Neale stirred Solent's partisan supporters with his dashing style.
Alan McDonald and Trevor Donaldson are also contributing well to the team effort, but they need to get a few more points on the board.
"It is quite clear from the players' mood at training this week that they feel last Saturday's result could be a stepping stone to better results," said club spokesman Pete Axon.
"And it cannot be said that Solent's management are complacent. Coach Mark Scott was in discussion with the directors this week with a view to bringing in other players to the squad. Further overseas signings are not ruled out."
Solent Stars have a third successive home match next Saturday (November 16, 8pm) against Hackney in the Conference.
