THE SOUND of maroons willl once again mark the beginning and end of the two-minute silence held in Newport and Ryde on Armistice Day next Monday.

The firing of the maroons will take place from the roof of County Hall in Newport and from the Esplanade at Ryde.

Yarmouth lifeboat will provide the Newport maroon with Ryde Inshore rescue providing the same service in Ryde.

The preceding day, Remembrance Sunday, will see council members lay wreaths at 17 different Royal British Legion ceremonies across the Island.

Vice-chairman of the council, Councillor John Bowker, will lay the council's wreath at Newport Cenotaph and the leader of the council, Councillor Shirley Smart and other council members will also be in attendance.

Chairman of the council, Councillor Heather Humby, will place the wreath at the memorial in Sandown.

She said: "I hope that everyone will find time to take part in the two-minute silence and commemorate all those who lost their lives in the great conflicts of the last century. The world is an increasingly uncertain place and as conflict continues around the globe, Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day give us time to reflect on the great price that previous generations had to pay for peace."
