POLICE are warning motorists not to park on the newly-enhanced Upper High Street.

Officers are looking through CCTV footage to identify the owners of vehicles which have already parked there illegally and could now issue official warnings to drivers.

"The message is simple: don't do it," said Pc Ted Reynolds from Andover CID.

"The work has cost a lot of money and the area is much improved.

"There is an unloading area and disabled area but otherwise there are signs which clearly state there should be no parking by other vehicles.

"Anyone caught there in the future will be dealt with," he said.

The warning is also being extended to cyclists who are persistently riding down the pedestrianised area, weaving in and out of shoppers.

The issue was raised at a meeting of the Councillors' Forum on Monday night by a concerned member of the public who had himself been knocked over by a cyclist.

Cyclists are banned from using the Upper High Street as a through route from Newbury and Marlborough Streets.

Chairman of the Councillors' Forum, Zilliah Brooks, promised to look into the possibility of erecting specific 'no cycling' signs.
