THOUSANDS of Muslims in Hampshire marked the start of Ramadan last night with special prayers.

The ninth month in the Islamic calendar was celebrated at mosques across the region during the evening.

Hundreds of people in Southampton descended on the Razivia Mosque in St Mary's Road.

It marked the time of year when it is believed the Holy Quran was sent down from heaven as a guide for mankind.

Similar prayers will be held for a month and Muslims will observe fasting between sunrise and sunset.

Mosque chairman Ahmed Shah Moied said: "It is not just about not drinking or eating.

"It's also about not cheating or being dishonest and to be truthful and show love to other human beings.

"At the end of Ramadan, money that is saved is given to charity or good causes.

"The aim is to become more humble and loving and to become a much better person."
