A THUMPING 31-6 victory by Janet Mudd's rink carried Palmerston through to the second round of the Vivienne Trophy - and left arch rivals Havant shell-shocked.

Havant won the three other rinks thanks to Dorothy Hallet (26-11 against Jean Evans), Joan Pearson (18-13 against Iris Fisher) and Gladys Monahan (22-18 against Rita Grant) but glorious Mudd swung the verdict Palmerston's way 73-72.

In the next round of this English Women's Indoor Club Championship on Thursday, November 14, Palmerston face Arun who beat Atherley 77-68 to complete a miserable double for the Southampton club - they have been knocked out of the two major EWIBA championships at the first hurdle this winter.

Val Parsons (17-13 against Audrey Greenfield) was Atherley's only successful skip with Gwen Weaver losing 21-14 to Margaret Schofield, Betty Jacob falling 20-16 to Pat Terry and Joan Penfold finishing 23-21 down to Sonia Heil.

Atherley were in good company as Banister Park bowed out without even winning a rink 84-71 to Five Rivers.

Although the biggest winning rink margin was just six, they all went against Banister Park whose beaten skips were Iris Kendall (22-21 against Jean Fenner), Gill Hitchcock (18-16 against Marian Menzies), Pam Fraser (24-20 against Margaret Annetts) and Audrey Davis (20-14 against Rosie Ellis).

Five Rivers now tackle Victory who brushed the Isle of Wight aside 110-40, Bunty Rumbold leading the spree with a 39-8 triumph against Olive Munsie.

Eva North outgunned Audrey Sheen 26-11, Marianne Unwin sunk Daphne Wallace 25-10 and Trish Hampton silenced Flo Williams 21-11.

Today (Thursday) the spotlight turns to the National Express Yetton Trophy, second round. Fixtures: Victory v Palmerston, Arun v Isle of Wight, Havant v Five Rivers, Riverside v Banister Park.
