TOURIST chiefs are drawing up a long-term strategy to put Eastleigh firmly on the map and give a major boost to the local economy.

A survey by the Southern Tourist Board revealed that the value of tourism to the Eastleigh economy was estimated at £77.4m.

Now it is hoped that new hotels planned for Hampshire's state-of-the-art Rose Bowl ground and Southampton International Airport will help to make the borough's tourist trade an even bigger money-spinner.

A three-year tourism strategy, starting next April, will be unveiled to councillors on Thursday.

In the report, head of arts and tourism Cheryl Butler says: "Although there is still a shortage of accommodation, two new hotels will open during the lifetime of this strategy to join six currently operating."

A campaign to increase the amount of bed and breakfast accommodation had led to several new operators coming on stream.

Surveys have revealed that the area, which stretches to the shores of the River Hamble, is popular for weekend breaks.

During the week it has become a magnet for corporate customers.

The most popular activities among visitors to the area are dining out, food festivals, countryside events and walking.

The most requested information includes events listings and a leaflet about famous people.

The strategy's major aims include promoting the new hotels planned for sites at the Rose Bowl and the airport.

Tourist bosses also aim to produce an annual full colour themed visitor guide, including a comprehensive accommodation directory for nationwide circulation, targeting the short break market.

It is also aimed to open up new tourist markets and develop tourism opportunities through public transport, walking and cycling and river buses.
