POLICE are hunting a hit-and-run driver who struck a man and left him for dead.
The 59-year-old man from Fareham was crossing Redlands Lane outside the One Stop shop when he was hit by the car.
He was then flung into the air before being hit by another oncoming car.
Paramedics took the man to Queen Alexandra Hospital suffering from life threatening injuries. This morning the man was in a serious but stable condition in hospital. His injuries were described as 'still life threatening'.
Police were today appealing for witnesses to the incident that happened at 6.20pm last night.
A spokesman for Hampshire police said: "We know the victim had just disembarked from a bus and was crossing the road when he was struck by the car, it was unknown and failed to stop."
The driver who police want to trace sped off in the direction of The Avenue.
Sgt Cleaven Faulkner from Fareham traffic added: "From the information we have, it seems that the gentleman was hit twice - first by the car we want to trace and second by a driver who probably had no chance of avoiding him but did stop after the accident."
The road was sealed off for more than two hours after the accident while officers scoured the scene.
Anyone with information can contact Insp David Watkins at Fareham traffic on 0845 045 4545.
