Die Fledermaus, The Welsh National Opera, Mayflower Theatre
This operetta composed by Johann Strauss the younger was first performed in Vienna in April 1874.
Eisenstein and Dr Falke had attended a fancy dress party. Falke was left asleep outdoors while still dressed as a bat; he felt foolish and planned revenge on his friend.
Both Eisenstein and his wife Rosalinde indulged in adulterous behaviour. Later, on his way to prison, Eisenstein attends a party with Falke. Much debauchery ensues. Eventually there were admissions of guilt by all - and a relatively happy ending.
This production in modern English, with Welsh overtones, had everything. Farce at its best, boxer shorts and all! Topical jokes were included. The music of Strauss was a joy, the singing marvellous and by the performance by all totally superb. It was both exuberant and colourful, with an enthusiastic cast.
Forget any preconceived ideas you have about opera - the Welsh National's production of Die Fledermaus is a breath of fresh air. They deserve a full house every night.
