Bashley and Newport IoW lit up firework night by knocking Premier Division opposition out of the Dr Marten's League Cup.

While Bash twice came back from behind to beat a Havant & Waterlooville XI 3-2 at the Recreation Ground, Steve Tate was in buoyant spirits after watching his struggling Newport side gun down his old club Weymouth 3-1 on the Island.

It was a memorable evening for new strikers with Bashley's recent signing Danny Gibbons netting his first two goals for the Foresters and Jamie O'Rourke, the man who replaced Gibbons at Newport, scoring on his home debut.

After the embarrassment of their Hampshire Senior Cup exit at Eastleigh last week, Port - with just two wins under their belts all season - must have feared the worst when they fell behind in the opening seconds.

But Adam Lang equalised direct from a 65th-minute corner - his first goal for the club - and eight minutes later substitute Mark Isaacson crashed in a brave, diving header after Adam Barsdell's free-kick had rebounded off the bar.

It went from bad to worse for Geoff Butler's shell-shocked Terras in the 81st minute when O'Rourke netted from a tight angle to give the Eastern Division table-proppers fresh hope in a so-far torrid season.

Tate, whose side now entertain Salisbury City in round two, proclaimed: "Hopefully this is the result I've been looking for.

"It could be the turning point of our season.

"Football never ceases to amaze me. Our pathetic performance at Eastleigh really threw me, but I'm thrilled at the way we responded tonight. For Jamie to score on his home debut was really pleasing. The lad's quality and he's going to get a lot of goals for us."

Forest boss Barry Blankley must have equally high hopes for 25-year-old Gibbons, who picked up the man-of-the-match award as Bashley booked themselves a second-round trip to Premier Division side Chippenham Town.

Having hit the woodwork through Craig Davis after five minutes, the Eastern Division title-chasers fell behind to an exquisite left-foot strike from Phil Barnett in the 22nd minute.

Gibbons rammed home the follow-up, having headed against the bar in the 46th-minute, but Hawks replied immediately through Craig Leworthy, the 17-year-old son of non-league legend Dave.

Five minutes later the influential Gibbons flicked on Davis' long throw for Stuart Hussey to level at 2-2 and the busy striker netted the winner himself on 64 minutes amid a goalmouth scramble from Darren Robson's corner.

Blankley reflected: "Havant weren't at full strength but they've got plenty of depth of quality in their squad and it was a good win for us.

"We both put out the teams we wanted to and all I can worry about is what we do, not what they do.

"We upped the tempo in the second half and it was pleasing for Danny to get off the mark."
