Start-up businesses in Hampshire are now being offered a range of support services under a new scheme launched this month.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants' Start-Up business Rewards Programme gives owner-managers of new businesses discounts on everything from insurance to health care.

The initiative takes the form of a 'chequebook' containing offer vouchers for products and services the Institute has identified as key areas where start-ups often need support.

These include finance, human resources, telecoms and utilities. Among the major suppliers taking part are the AA and Vodafone.

Owners of new businesses engaging the services of a chartered accountant will qualify for the voucher chequebook.

David Lapthorn, president of the Southern Society of Chartered Accountants and a partner in Ward Goodman, said: "Someone setting up a new business is expected to become an instant expert on everything - from software packages to insurance.

"Getting to grips with all of this can be quite daunting and hopefully this programme may at least help ease the financial burden."

He added: "Chartered accountants are a primary source of advice for small business and this initiative aims to give added value to the support they provide."

Commenting on the new scheme, small business minister Nigel Griffiths said:"The Institute and its members have helped the government get over one-and-a-half million businesses started in the past five years and I am delighted to welcome this initiative."
