Belinda Carlisle, Southampton Guildhall

BELINDA Carlisle did not have to wait for a standing ovation to get the crowd on their feet at Southampton Guildhall.

By the third song - Summer Rain - a good half of the audience had abandoned their seats and headed for the front to dance at her feet.

Belinda put on an excellent show, proving that she is way above the eighties/nineties nostalgia shows that she has been known to take part in previously.

She might not give Madonna a run for her money anymore as the queen of pop, but she shone like a true star, bantering with the audience and, most importantly, belting out one great song after another.

She did not perform any new material, sticking instead to crowd-pleasers like Leave a Light On, Our Lips are Sealed, Runaway Horses and, of course, Heaven is a Place on Earth.

The Southampton crowd loved her, and, given the reception fit for a diva she got, she probably loved us.
