TRADITIONAL opera fans are in for an eyebrow-raising time at The Mayflower this week, as Welsh National Opera put good taste to the test with a new production billed as 'adults only'.
The renowned company, who are regular performers at The Mayflower, bring three productions to Southampton for their week-long season, including Tosca and Madam Butterfly.
But it is a close-to-the-bone version of Die Fledermaus which is set to make the biggest impression - and might even make one or two of the audience members loosen their bow ties.
Spanish director Calixto Bieito - who shocked Mayflower audiences earlier this year with his raunchy Cosi fan Tutte - has given the Strauss comedy a harder edge than usual, with extra helpings of sex and swearing.
You can see Die Fledermaus, sung in English, on Tuesday November 5 and Friday November 8. Tosca is on Wednesday November 6 and Saturday November 9, Madam Butterfly on Thursday November 7. Box office: 023 8071 1811.
