Winchester City 6, Old Tauntonians 1
ALTHOUGH it was a highly unfamiliar-looking City team that took the field for this Southampton Senior Cup tie, they still proved too formidable for their Drew Smith Southampton Premier opponents.
The City side included sixteen-year-old centre back Craig Vigar, who made his first team debut.
It took the home side fourteen minutes to break down the OTs rearguard, when a defensive mistake allowed Adam Rogers the chance to score the opening goal. Seven minutes later, Matt Owen was the provider with a right wing cross that was turned home by Paul Nelson.
Nelson added his second goal of the afternoon on 25 minutes, heading home from John Mulhern's corner as City threatened to run up a cricket score.
With seven minutes to the interval a deep cross from the left, this time by Wayne Smith, was headed into the net by Kevin Brewster.
On the stroke of half time it was Nelson again, shooting home to complete his hat-trick and give City a comfortable cushion.
At the start of the second period City failed to take two early opportunities, and the game drifted away to a nondescript second half.
OTs netted a consolation goal on 57 minutes through lively striker Alex Hoyle, but in the very last minute of the match, sub Matt Woods headed home from a Rogers cross to complete the scoreline.
In the second round, City entertain Southampton Senior League Senior Division One side Cadnam United (Saturday 16th November).
l The first setback to Winchester City's outstanding start to the season came in Tuesday night's Hampshire Premier League game at Andover New Street.
The game finished 11 the first points City have dropped all season.
New Street went ahead after ten minutes with a Colin Vince shot from 25 yards that flew beyond Darren Crowfoot. It was the only shot on goal all night to trouble the City keeper.
Andrew Forbes had and Paul Nelson both had City 'goals' disallowed, and despite striking the woodwork through Forbes, Danny Smith and Paul Nelson, City had to wait until the 82nd minute for the equaliser.
Then, Adam Rogers' cross was met by the left foot of Matthew Bicknell, who fired home.
New Street were reduced to ten men after just 36 minutes when Kevin Knight was dismissed by referee Mr Hunter following a fracas in which most of the outfield players were involved.
