Cinderella, Southern Theatre Productions, The Lantern Theatre, Romsey
Cinderella is perhaps the best known and most loved fairytale of all. This Rodgers and Hammerstein musical version of the traditional rags-to-riches story made such a refreshing change.
Elegant female white mice pulling the beautiful pumpkin coach, some strong dance routines and enthusiasm from all cast members when added to the highlights of an engagingly innocent Cinderella (Marie Carter-Murphy), superb singing by David Curtis (Prince Charming) and Melissa Curtis (Godmother), made for an entertaining evening. Soraya Scrivener was outstandingly funny as Portia; she was well supported by Natalie Baker (Joy) and Susan Barton-Leigh (Stepmother). Mention must also be made of the hardworking stage crew who coped well with many awkward scene/scenery changes.
A shame the programme made no mention of individual musicians; they played the lilting score well although the volume occasionally seemed to overpower the vocals.
Not a long show but an excellent evening out. Runs until November 2.
