Gusting gale force winds at the weekend led to cross-Solent ferry cancellations and fallen trees across several roads in and around the New Forest.

A large oak tree toppled onto the thatched roof of a country cottage at Newtown, Minstead, the home of Southampton General Hospital consultant, Dr Brian Leatherdale, and his wife.

At Barton-on-Sea, firefighters from New Milton used tarpaulins to make safe the roof of flats at Westminster Court on Sunday morning.

Ferry operator, Wightlink, cancelled its 4am to 7am Sunday sailings between Lymington and Yarmouth, due to the extreme weather conditions.

A shuttle service was then run until 5.45pm, when a full service was resumed.

Travellers also faced delays when rail services were disrupted by the weather. Some South West Trains services were cancelled because of the bad conditions.

The problems continued into Monday as repairs were carried out to power lines.

Trees were brought crashing down on Saturday night and Sunday in the New Forest and bordering Test Valley areas.

A large tree partially blocked the A35 between Lyndhurst and Ashurst and another blocked the A338 between Ringwood and Fordingbridge, near Ibsley.

There were more traffic problems when a tree fell across Station Road in Fordingbridge, near its junction with Jubilee Close, and another fell at Bleak Hill, Harbridge.

A tree fell across Ringwood Road, Bransgore, opposite the Three Tuns pub, another brought down power lines in Deerleap Lane, Marchwood, and broken overhanging branches proved a problem on the A326 Marchwood bypass.

In the Lymington area, a tree crashed onto the A337 north of the town and another two came tumbling onto exposed Undershore Road at South Baddesley.

More trees toppled at Ridge Lane and Gardeners Lane, Ower.

A fir tree also fell near homes in Waverley Avenue, New Milton, on Friday evening. Firefighters were called out while a tree surgeon made the tree safe.
