AN Andover & District Sunday Football League cup game had to be abandoned at the weekend after the match referee decided that he had had enough - and walked off the pitch! Station Hotel from division two were winning 3-1 against first division side Fred Druce with goals from Ryan Boare, Rob Dixon and Mark Bowsher in the Jimmy Monro Memorial Open Cup when the first round tie came to a premature end midway through the second half.
"Both teams were both amazed when he walked off, " said Station Hotel team manager Brian Austin. "He didn't say anything to the players but walked off the pitch, got in his car and drove off."
Austin added that the referee had sent off one of his players and Fred Druce had missed a penalty when someone on the touch line made a comment about the way the referee was handling the game.
ADSL secretary John Austin (no relation) said the game would probably have to be replayed. "We've heard nothing yet from the referee," he said this week.
