THE spirit of Senegal comes to The Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday with a performance by one of the most acclaimed groups in world music.
Orchestra Baobab formed in 1970 as the weekend house band for the Baobab Club in Dakar. With their unique fusion of Cuban and African sounds, they soon became so popular they were performing every night of the week.
Their special sound, tinged with reggae, owes everything to the cosmopolitan nature of the band.
Re-formed last year after an almost 20-year break, the group effortlessly recapture the laid-back magic that made them Africa's musical superstars in the Seventies and Eighties.
Last year's reissue of their classic album Pirate's Choice topped the UK world music charts, while their latest album, Specialist in All Styles, was released to rave reviews.
Orchestra Baobab are at The Anvil, Basingstoke on Saturday at 7.45pm. For tickets and information, call the box office on 01256 844244.
