PORTISHEAD'S Andy Smith deviated from the melancholy yet melodious riffs of the band he drums for when with a bouncy set of funky treats at the Orange Rooms.
Just when crowds were groaning as the sounds of a hackneyed classic ripping through the speakers, Smith surprised listeners by overlaying outrageously different tracks.
Eminem never sounded better than when buried underneath the funkier, more upbeat tunes spun by the Bristol band's drummer.
The set kept everyone guessing as it wound through bopping breaks and chilled vibes.
Someone complained he was looking for something a bit more Portishead - but a guy's got to be allowed a night off.
The Orange Rooms made a pleasant venue with space to stretch out upstairs and gaze at goldfish. At times the attitude seemed more Sloane Square than Southampton but Smith kept it real with his new slant on old skool.
