SPECIALIST servomotor manufacturer Control Techniques Dynamics, has engineered a win, win,win situation at its factory in Andover by employing the cable-making team from the disabled people's charity Enham Industries.

The three-strong team were due to be made redundant following a shift in direction by Enham Industries, which is redeveloping its services in line with the changing expectations of disabled people and new government initiatives.

Control Techniques Dynamics had been using Enham Industries to provide it with cables since the company launched its "plug & play" cable assembly service for motors and drives in 1998. When managing director Keith Hedges heard of the cable team's plight he immediately decided to bring the service in-house, and offered jobs to the three Enham employees.

Now the complete cable-making assembly line has been transplanted lock, stock and barrel to Control Techniques Dynamics' factory. This has enabled the company to standardise the cable-wiring colours in line with European Desina coding and has allowed the company to offer customers a more competitive and faster service.

"This arrangement has benefited everyone including our customers," says Keith Hedges."The Enham Industries personnel are an asset to the company and are thoroughly enjoying being part of Control Techniques Dynamics' workforce."

The team, comprising Cliff Sears, Mandy Wilson and Toby St Quintin, are now producing and testing around 50 assemblies a week. This involves cutting the cables to the appropriate length, fitting terminals to both ends and testing them using automatic testing equipment. Orders to date have included sending 400 cable assemblies to Israel and turning round a large order for The Rolling Stones Tour in record time.

Control Techniques Dynamics' ready-made cables mean system installers can avoid the intricate, time-consuming assembly normally associated with connecting servo systems. Installation and set-up times are greatly reduced and there is no fiddling with wire connections, crimp tools or faultfinding. Cables are made to order in lengths from 2m to 100m and are compatible with all CTD motors and CT Drives.

Enham is now concentrating its resources on ensuring that being disabled is not a barrier to mainstream employment. The charity's programmes now include Work Preparation, Work Based Learning for Adults and NVQ and City & Guilds courses that enable individuals to experience real work and to understand and manage their disability in the workplace.
