Glen Milligan (Fairoak) put in a superb performance during the National Federation of Sea Anglers Personal Members boat Championships held out from Poole where he won his boat on both days during the star-studded event which attracted numerous International anglers.

A number of other local anglers also finished well in the results, including Ray Barron from the Waterside who was the overall winner on day two along with Rob Shattock and Tony Spridgeon from the Hamble club also getting among the prizes.

Milligan was closely followed by Ray Ashby from Christchurch with 197.02, Jim Presley 195.52, Colin Bond 193.87, Ken Froud 188.51, Ray Barron 188.17, Barrie Senior 180.90, Rob Shattock 178.57, Tim Hook 177.87 and Dean Saunders 177.78.

David Rowe, the secretary of the National Federation of Sea Anglers, along with Geoff Knight, the Chairman of the Wessex Division of the NFSA, were on hand to present the trophies for a number of classes.

Principal trophy winners were: Tony Spridgeon (Hamble) the heaviest fish, an 8-2 undulate ray; Glen Milligan (Fairoak) most points over two days 200; Ray Barron (Waterside) most fish points one day 163; Richard Russell (I.O.W) greatest number of fish on one day 112; Ray Ashby (Christchurch) best specimen, a 4-5 ballan wrasse; Mike Foyle (Christchurch) most species 6; The trophy for the most cod was shared by Dick Barnes and Cliff Newbold who both landed one fish each.

The four-man-man team event was won by Ray Ashby, Dean Saunders, Mike Foyle and Ken Froud, who are all members of the Christchurch club, followed by a local team comprising of Ray Barron, Glen Milligan, Kim Bowden and Dave Oliver, who is the Wessex Division NFSA personal members representative.

Some cracking fish have been apprehended during the past few days with both boat and shore anglers sampling the action with Kevin Basham, from the Isle of Wight, landing a superb mullet from the river Medina.

Not to be outdone, Paul Camilleri, a 36-year-old painter and decorator from Shirley, caught his first ever bass during a recent trip on the Lymington-based boat "Tomkat2 skippered by John Skeggs.

Fishing over a mark in the western Solent, Paul caught several bass topped by a cracker which tipped the scales down to 8lb 1oz - all the fish were taken on a spinning outfit along with a rapala.

Adverse weather conditions put a dampener on the second round of the ABU Garcia-backed Wessex Junior flounder league with just six youngsters returning fish to the scales.

Luke Woods, who does not celebrate his fifth birthday for another couple of months, won on the night with a 1lb 7oz flattie followed by seven-year-old George Carter (15oz), Nick Parker (12oz) and then Beith Skinner, Sophie Fisk & Nick Cobb (all 5oz).

All eyes will be set on Southampton's Weston Shore on Sunday which is the setting for the Poingdestre's 16th International Open Beach Festival with fishing in three zones between Weston Shore and Hamble common from 11am to 4pm.

The event, to be organised by the Shirley club, has a £1,000 top prize up for grabs along with £500 for the runner-up and another £250 for the third placed angler.

There will also be two cash prizes in the ladies section and three cash prizes in the junior section, plus £1,000 worth of prizes.

Adult tickets have been set at £8.50 plus pools while juniors will have to pay £4 plus pools.

For the first time this year there will be a new trophy on offer - for the heaviest catch which has been named the Roy Harding Memorial Trophy.

Booking in gets underway at the main Weston Car park from 9am, pre-book facilities are available at Poingdestre's Angling Centre.

With flounders already showing freely throughout Southampton water some fair sport can be expected but if there is a good chop on the surface some big silver eels and the odd bass could also put in an appearance during the event which also doubles up as a Penn point fixture. On Saturday evening there is the second round of the open pegged Chesil league to be held at Abbotsbury with fishing from 6pm to 11pm. Tickets are strictly pre-book only. Full details from Eddie Painter (01308-425925).

An anticipated prize fund of over £1,000 is expected on November 2 when Drayton AC stage a pegged open at Eastney with fishing from 6pm to 11pm.

Tickets for the event, which also doubles up as a Penn point fixture, have been set at £12 plus pools; they are strictly pre-book only.

The overall winner should collect around £500, depending on entry, followed by £250 for the runner-up and £175 for the third placed angler.
