WORLD-renowned author and psychologist Desmond Morris has opened one of the Southampton's strangest exhibitions.

Curiouser & Curiouser: A Surrealist Sensation features some of the best surrealist art around - including several works by Morris himself.

Perhaps best known as the best-selling author of The Naked Ape and People Watching, and TV series The Human Animal, Desmond Morris is also regarded as one of Britain's leading surrealist painters.

The Surrealist movement originated in Paris in 1920 and counted artists such as Salvador Dali, Renne Magritte and Joan Miro, among its number. It drew on dreams and the subconscious for its inspiration, and left a legacy of unforgettable images.

The Southampton exhibition - running until December 15 at Southampton Art Gallery - focuses on the British surrealist movement

The gallery is open Tuesdays to Saturdays (10am to 5pm) and Sundays (1pm to 4pm). Workshops, talks and children's events accompany most exhibitions.
