THE Daily Echo's Be Safe, Be Sensible campaign has inspired one group of youngsters to create their own posters to get the message across.

An array of colourful designs stands alongside the Daily Echo's posters in the front window of the No Limits drop-in centre in Portsmouth Road, Sholing, Southampton.

The young people's charity has backed our drive for women and all vulnerable people to take extra care on the streets and avoid becoming victims of crime.

Kerry Haynes, a youth worker, said: "Advising youngsters about personal safety is something we always try to do here.

"That's why we're supporting the Daily Echo's campaign. Any posters that are put up in public place to raise awareness about people's safety help."

Mrs Haynes asked youngsters aged from 13 to 25 to come up with their own designs based on the five-point safety plan featured in the Daily Echo's posters:

Don't walk home alone.

Be picked up by a friend or trusted taxi.

Stick to well lit main roads.

Carry a personal alarm.

Don't ignore your instincts.

"We have tried to reinforce some of the tips on how to stay safe," said Mrs Haynes.

"Youngsters coming to the centre - both men and women - have spoken about how vulnerable they feel walking home late at night."

No Limits has three drop-in centres across the city at Sholing, Shirley and in the city centre. The charity offers advice, information and counselling for 13- to 25-year-olds.

Mrs Haynes is in the process of setting up a new women's group and said the Daily Echo's campaign has helped kickstart its meetings looking at personal safety.
