HAMPSHIRE pupils have recorded their best GCSE exam results, posting statistics well above the national standard.

Results published by Hampshire County Council show that 57 per cent of 16-year- olds achieved five or more A*-C grades in this year's exams, a one per cent increase on last year.

Winchester's Kings School was among the top schools in the region, with 100 per cent of pupils entering five or more GCSEs and 81 per cent of those winning five or more A*-C grades.

Head teacher Ray Bradbury said: "Part of the school's ethos is to do your best and they have. What the children have achieved is better than I know how to describe."

Mr Bradbury was particularly pleased to see his boys outperforming the girls this year, against the national trend.

Romsey's Mountbatten School also made a good showing in the tables, with a total points score of 51 and all but one of their pupils coming away with five or more A*-G grades.

Head teacher Lesley Morffew said: "We are really delighted. It was an excellent year group with a brilliant work ethic.

"We are particularly pleased that nearly everyone got five or more A*-G grades. That's what comprehensive education is all about - people competing at their own level."

County education boss councillor Don Allen congratulated pupils, teachers and parents on the high level of achievement.

"The hard work and commitment given by pupils and teachers has been reflected once again in this year's results. Everyone involved with these young people's education can feel justly proud of the part they have played in this success story," he said.

County education officer Andrew Seber agreed.

He said: "The results show that high standards continue to be maintained in our schools. We aim to ensure all young people are given the opportunity to work to the best of their ability and this year's results recognise this.

"I wish all 16-year-olds in Hampshire every success with their next step into further education or employment," he added.
