Winchester City are doing the Hampshire League proud in the FA Vase after a storming 5-2 first-round victory over unbeaten Kent League side Cray Wanderers at the City Ground.

Seasoned Vase campaigners Wanderers took an early lead, then Matthew Bicknell missed a penalty for City. But Winchester took charge with headers from Jamie Smith and Andy Forbes before half-time.

Then the Kent side were brushed aside by some breathtaking football in the second half as Forbes completed his hat-trick and brought his tally for the season to 21.

Victory, which sends City sailing into the second round proper, extended their winning run to 16 games.

Poole Town believe they have unearthed a new goalscoring hero in 19-year-old French student Karim Banssaouda. Their new signing from Brockenhurst rifled a first-half hat-trick to set up a 4-1 win at Brading Town. Two of the goals were quality left-foot strikes, one an audacious lob over the 'keeper.

Ricky Larbalestier pulled one back for Brading but Danny Neville completed an emphatic Premier Division victory for the Dolphins.

East Cowes Vics moved within two points of leaders Winchester City with a 2-0 victory at Amesbury where first-half goals by Wayne Newnham and Darren Plenty did the business.

Ringwood Town picked up three well-earned points at Petersfield where a last-minute goal clinched a 2-1 victory.

Farnborough North End struggled in the early weeks of the season without a quality 'keeper and with their top-scoring striker, Paul Griffiths, sidelined by injury.

Now they have persuaded former 'keeper Stuart Churchill to sign on while Griffiths has been back for the last four games in which North End have netted 17 goals.

Their 3-2 win over Alresford Town in the First Division on Saturday was down to two goals from Griffiths and another from Chris Miles, all before the break.

Alresford came fighting back, getting their second with only a couple of anxious minutes for North End to hang on.

Laverstock & Ford manager Andy Wykes had to wait 28 days to restore last season's top scorer Dom Male to the attack after signing him back from Bemerton.

Wykes explained: "I made an initial seven-day approach for Nick Newman, got him back, then made another approach for Dom. But, according to the rules, I had to wait 28 days to play him."

The wait proved worthwhile as Male got his first start on Saturday and made the match-winning goal against Ordnance Survey with a driving run and a shot which the 'keeper only parried to Toby Giles who gratefully finished off.
