REVELLERS at an inner-city nightclub in Southampton will be following the Daily Echo's safety campaign in coming months.

The Edge in St Mary's Road has become the latest nightspot in Hampshire to back the Be Safe, Be Sensible initiative.

Bosses are putting specially-designed posters around the venue give advice to clubbers returning home.

They encourage people to remember five safety points:

Don't walk home alone.

Be picked up by a friend or trusted taxi.

Stick to well-lit main roads.

Carry a personal alarm.

Don't ignore your instincts.

Stuart Bambrough, The Edge manager, said the message was particularly important for the gay nightclub.

"It's an excellent idea because the gay venues are a bit more vulnerable to attacks, especially in this area.

"A lot of our clientele do get attacked. At the end of the day, like any nightclub, when they leave here they've had quite a bit to drink and it's quite late."

The Magnum nightclub and The Hobbit in the city are also supporting the Daily Echo's campaign, which has been launched in conjunction with Hampshire police.

Other backers include Home Office minister and Southampton Itchen MP John Denham, city cabbies, First Bus company and Southampton Institute.

The safety blitz aims to cut attacks and sexual assaults across the county.

It was piloted in the Fareham area, where seven women fell victim to a serial sex attacker in just five weeks, and has now been extended across Hampshire.
