Hampshire and Isle of Wight Army Cadets are set for some fun under the leadership of their new commandant Colonel Mike Bradley, who remembers his own younger days spent in the area.
"I firmly believe all cadet activities should be fun, if it's not, they won't do it.
"We need to redress the balance of fun and enjoyment. It is important for our young people to learn to be good citizens in the community but at the same time they can enjoy themselves.
"I also aim to promote the ACF in the area and make people more aware of what we do for the youngsters.
"There are so many opportunities for the cadets from the adventurous to the academic if they want it. Many of the skills they learn stay with them for life and look good on their CVs."
Colonel Bradley (57), is currently commander, regional recruiting, for the South-East, and has served in the army for almost 40 years in a wide range of appointments.
He was educated at Marlborough College and commissioned into the Green Howards. His recent appointments have included commanding the depot of the Kings Division, commandant of Otterburn training area and military adviser to the Prime Minister of Belize for which he was awarded an OBE.
A keen sportsman, he has played hockey and cricket and has sailed for the army. He is also a keen skier and, for many years, ran the Army Infantry Nordic Ski Championships.
His main interests now are golf, walking, travel and military history. He is also an ardent Southampton football supporter which stems from his schooldays when he was coached by professional from the club.
He now lives in Farnham and is married to Rozie and they have two grown up sons.
