If your name is Perrott, Parrott, Perrett, Porritt or any other variation on the original French name of Perot, there's an event for you at Winchester Cathedral Refectory tomorrow (Saturday).
It's a meeting of the P*rr*tt Society, which was founded in Bath in 1984 to enable all those researching any variation of the name to pool their information.
Many interesting P*rr*tts have come to light through this research. Sir John Perrot, for instance, was a one-time Lieutenant Governor of Ireland and a member of Elizabeth I's entourage.
However, that didn't stop her signing his death warrant for alleged treason, but he had the last laugh - he died of gallstones in the Tower of London before he could be executed!
Then there was the optimistic John Perrott, a Quaker who set off with a friend in the 17th century to Rome in an attempt to convert the Pope to Protestantism.
His friend was killed en route and John, needless to say, was unsuccessful. He later moved to Barbados where, despite his religious beliefs, he lived the life of Riley and enjoyed the pleasures of the flesh to the full.
Sometimes the oddity lay just in the matter of a name. Who could fail to remember a man with a name like Conquer Perrott, an Oxfordshire man who died there in 1673?
If you would like to know more, just go to the meeting, which runs from 10am to 4pm - or ring organiser, Penny Parrett, on 01489-896174.
