Two students from King Alfred's, Winchester, have claimed one of the top prizes in a national film festival in Glasgow in the summer.

Third year media and film students, Tristan Tull and Martin Watkins, were runners-up in the documentary section of the 8th Annual Real to Reel Film Festival.

Their documentary is also being shown at the forthcoming international Kino Film Festival in Manchester.

Entitled May Day 2001, it takes a closer look at the anti-capitalist demonstrations in London.

Martin explained: "Our initial aim was to simply capture the events on film but, after seeing it for ourselves, we wanted to explore the idea that every situation could be portrayed in a certain light and that, therefore, nothing is as black and white as it first seems.

"The end product is our footage 'book-ended' with news coverage from the days before and after.

"We hope viewers can draw their own conclusions about the event from the different formats used in the documentary."

Tristan said they were shocked to do so well in a competition that had over 100 entrants.

"All the documentaries were showcased in the tallest cinema in Europe - UCG,Glasgow - and comparing ours with other entrants who benefited from huge crews and editors, we were particularly surprised and thrilled to have done so well."

Head of cultural studies at the college, Andrew Blake added: "We're proud of Tristan and Martin's award. Their attitude to the material they were working with, as much as their high level of competency, makes their achievement very much part of our School of Cultural Studies.

"Their film tries to look under the surface of an important cultural phenomenon. We're sure they will go on to have successful careers as cultural commentators."
