Winchester cricketers have paid tribute to one of their players who was killed in last weekend's Bali bomb outrage.

New Zealander, Mark Parker (27), played for St Cross Symondians CC for three seasons as one of their overseas representatives.

He was returning to his home town, Timaru, near Christchurch and had stopped off for a vacation, only to be caught in the huge explosion which engulfed the island's Sari nightclub in Kuta.

St Cross club chairman, Andy Sharp, said members were "devastated" and were planning a tribute to Mark.

"He was an extremely popular figure with everyone. He was a typical Kiwi-quiet, unassuming, keen to praise others. He was determined and competitive, but always played in the right spirit."

Mark worked in London as an investment banker and used to travel to Winchester at the weekend to play.

He hoped to break into the Wellington state side before returning to St Cross next year and came from a family of fine cricketers. His uncle, John, captained New Zealand and his father, Murray, played Test cricket.

Mr Sharp said Mark was one of the key players who helped the club win this season's promotion from the third to the second division in the Southern Electric Premier cricket league.

The club's website has Mark topping the fielding performances with 12 catches. He was also the top batsman with an average of 46.5 and a total of 465 runs.

"He was simply one of the nicest and most genuine people you could hope to meet. Our thoughts and sympathies go out to his family," added Andy.
